Mary Jo was in the back seat and, while he claimed he was just giving her a lift back to her hotel, it was widely thought that he had picked her up for sex. Kennedy swam ashore to save himself, but left Mary Jo to drown - in fact, it was even worse than that. It was nine hours before he reported the accident. In the meantime, he walked back to his motel, complained to the manager about a noisy party, took a shower, went to sleep, ordered newspapers when he woke up and spoke to a friend and two lawyers before finally calling the police. Divers later estimated that if he had called them immediately, they would have had time to pull out Mary Jo. She had not drowned, but had survived.
I read somewhere else - I can't find the article again - that MJ Kopechne survived for 3 hours on the oxygen left in the car and her head was tilted toward the air pocket when they took her body out. She lived and waited for him to come back for her in total darkness. UNREAL!
No wonder he didn't want an autopsy. Maybe they were capable of killing Marilyn Monroe.

That is true. Her last hours must have been horrible, trapped in total blackness, up to her neck in cold water, gasping for every breath. I'm not suggesting that Kennedy had a conscience, but if he did, her ghost might have driven him to be the monster he was. The real story here is that no Republican could ever survive any of the scandals that Kennedy did.
She thought for sure he must be coming back with help! I just can't believe it. No wonder his wife at the time becamse a drunk. The reality of what he did.
I hope Mary Jo gets visiting privileges to go below and kick him.
My theory is, and always was, is this:
They were having an affair. Mary Jo became pregnant and threatened to go public. This would have destroyed his political careeer, or so he thought.
This was the last time Kennedy (or any Democrat) ever underestimated the American media, as his next actions proved.
Kennedy pushed the running car with Mary Jo, unconscious (probably from a blow to the head) in the car, into the water. Then, he spent the next 9 hours or so fabricating a story to explain it all. Although weak, he knew the story would be believed by the fawning Kennedy loving media, and that would keep him out of trouble. As it did.
Of course, we'll never know the truth. But my theory, or something very similar, is probably more correct than any we will ever see from the media.
Thanks, Tonto, I had mistakenly thought MJK drowned. The man who abandoned her would have been pure EVIL, and could easily have made a contract with Satan to retain his seat for another 40 years.
No doubt Kennedy would have asked for the standard two-years notice before a final summons to Hell was served on him, but, as we see, his noticed was negotiated down to a mere 15 months.
Jeff Israely's piece in TIME, "After Kennedy's Death: Silence from the Pope", offers a bit of final solace for followers of Kennedy's religion, as well as an interesting conjecture.
