BAGHDAD, Nov 5 (Reuters) - A U.S.-backed Iraqi court on
Sunday sentenced toppled leader Saddam Hussein to death by
hanging for crimes against humanity.
The ousted president, visibly shaken, shouted out "Allahu
Akbar!" (God is Greatest) and "Long live the nation!".
The Iraqi High Tribunal also handed down death sentences to
former revolutionary chief judge Awad Hamed al-Bander and
Saddam's half brother and former intelligence chief Barzan
Ibrahim al-Tikriti. Former Iraqi vice president Taha Yassin
Ramadan was sentenced to life in prison.
The charges stemmed from the killing of 148 Shi'ite men in
Dujail after an assassination attempt against Saddam in 1982.
A death sentence or life imprisonment generates an automatic appeal, delaying any execution by months at least. Saddam has said he wants to face a military firing squad, not the hangman.
This whole thing took only about 30 minutes. That was incredibly fast. Now, those sentenced to death get an automatic appeal. After the appeal process is completed, the sentences must be carried out within 30 days.
Still haven't seen the footage of Saddam in court. That's going to be interesting. Everyone is seeing the tape at the same time.
He's being called into the courtroom. Switching to al-Jazeera. Judge telling him to stand up, but he won't. Guards standing him up. "LONG LIVE THE COUNTRY, LONG LIVE THE PEOPLE, GOT IS GREAT, GOD IS GREAT!" These cowardly thugs are all alike. He's continuing to shout.
Now it's his half-brother's turn to get the bad news. He headed Saddam's intelligence agency. Kind of like Heinrich Himmler. He comes in shouting before even hearing the verdict. Gunfire is heard in Baghdad. Probably celebratory.
Th-th-th-th-th-that's all, folks.

this is all a conspiracy to help the Republicans win the election in two days!!...Sadaam was framed and sentenced just in time for the election to keep the republicans in power...it is so obvious!!!
So now the Suni's takae to the streets dancing in celebration of his impending death and the Shiites take to the streets protesting his death. These muslims are indeed Looneys, all of them.
I think you got it backward, rick. It's the Shiites who are celebrating the sentence and the Sunnis who oppose it. I really wish it were the other way around, because then I could have made a joke about the Shiite hitting the fan.
