Matchmaker didn't keep promise to find eligible BILLIONAIRES!

One of the only perks of being a lawyer in Los Angeles is that here in California you will see and hear it all...well below is just one of the funniest cases that I had to tell you about...REMEMBER THIS IS ALL TRUE and the case went to trial just this past summer. Here's all the facts...you be the jury! Once upon a time...there once was a business called "ORLY THE MATCHMAKER" located, of course, in Beverly Hills...I kid you not...and one day a woman named Anne, a social worker, contacted this Bevery Hills matchmaker "Orly" seeking introductions to men. This woman "Ann" paid $50,000 for the promise that Orly would set her up with successful, highly educated romantic men from around the world who enjoy fine dining, travel and leisure. Orly the matchmaker also told Ann that these men were seeking a monogamous relationship earning over $1 million a year and boasting personal wealth that exceeds $20 million. Over the next year Ann contacted five men through Orly the matchmaker going on dates with two of them. Ann told Orly that the men were inappropriate and Orly promised to find a billionaire for Ann if she would pay an additional $50,000. Orly the matchmaker then set her up with a retired firefighter from Altoona, Pennsylvania whose net worth was below $1 million [shocker]!! Ann then sued Orly the Matchmaker for fraud and [get this] breach of California's dating service statute Section 1694.1. Ann's attorney argued that Orly committed fraud by promising Ann that Orly the matchmaker had access to eligible men when it didn't. Orly told Ann about men in the service, but then during trial Orly no longer had access to any of the men's files. Ann's attorney also claimed that Orly committed fraud by charging Ann a 2nd time to meet billionaires, when all she could find was the retired firefighter [poor guy]. Ann's attorney also noted the Orly the matchmaker's website describes an international banker, who is really an interpreter who once worked in a bank!! Ann's attorney also accused Orly of preying on Ann and other SENIORS! because they were LONELY, pointing out that Orly the matchmaker was sued several times by other disgruntled clients and that the Better Business Bureau has investigated complaints against the service. Orly of course denied all the allegations and Orly, in fact, sued Ann for fraud. Orly said Ann was a "SERIAL USER "of matchmakers who admittedly had problems with a previous matchmaking service. Orly also said Ann slept with all the men Orly set her up with only to claim later that she had been psychologically damaged and demand money. Orly also accused Ann at trial that Orly introduced Ann to several attractive mates and Ann raved about them after going on dates. Orly also claimed Ann was NOT A GOOD DATE, often making bold and inappropriate inquiries to the men about their income and personal wealth. Ann sued and wanted $100,000 for her fees she paid and $2 million for pain and suffering. Orly the matchmaker sued Ann for $700,000 in damages to the business' reputation and $298,000 in lost income. THE RESULT....who won at TRIAL....drum roll please!!!...JURY FOUND ORLY THE MATCHMAKER WAS BUSTED...and awarded Ann $2.1 million. Not too shabby for a couple of bad dates... so much of this case is just plain funny to me but you decide what stands out to you most...if anything.
