Although the words, "separation of church and state" do not appear in the Constitution, liberals swear up and down that they do. Maybe they're using some kind of ultra-violet glasses or something. But their second-highest cause (abortion is the first) goes out the window when they can use churches for their own benefit, such as when Democrats campaign from the pulpit in black churches, or in incidents such as this:
Immigration activists around the country are taking up the cause of a single mother who invoked the ancient principle of sanctuary and took refuge in a Chicago church rather than submit to deportation to Mexico.Elvira Arellano, 31, was holed up for a second day Wednesday at Aldalberto United Methodist Church with the support of the congregation's pastor. With her was her 7-year-old son, Saul, an American citizen.

Federal officials said there is no right to sanctuary in a church under U.S. law, and nothing to prevent them from arresting her. But they would not say exactly what they planned to do, or when.

That sanctuary thing should only work for gypsy girls in french novels, not illegal aliens in the U.S. I say slap the cuffs on her pronto before our churches are jam-packed by people who have no interested in worshiping God but, instead, finding loop holes in immigration.
At any rate, sanctuary is a Catholic thing. She's in a Methodist church.
Pretty much. Papal sanction was first given to sanctuary by Pope Leo I, about 460, while the Protestant reformation didn't begin until 1516.
But, when it comes to religion, people can pretty much claim anything they want.
Right on, again, Mr. Ranger.
The "separation of church and state" thing IS the hypocrisy.
Only liberals are allowed to use churches and the Bible when it suits them. If they only knew the truth of the rest of the famous Jefferson letter that used that term that they build their whole premise on. It actually is a letter in reply to the concerns of a religious group that was worried that they would lose their religious freedom, and Jefferson was assuring them that the government would not interfere.
Who would have known that his own letter of assurance of religious freedom would be used to take away that freedom...
I learn so much from these discussions!
