This Day in Republican History 6/08/06

June 8, 1866

U.S. Senate passes Republicans’ 14th Amendment guaranteeing due process and equal protection of the law to all citizens; 94% of Republicans vote yes and 100% of Democrats vote no

The 14th amendment was proposed to the legislatures of the several States by the 39th Congress, on the 13th of June, 1866. It was declared, in a certificate of the Secretary of State dated July 28, 1868 to have been ratified by the legislatures of 28 of the 37 States.

Ratification was completed on July 9, 1868.

More info here.

This happened before that magical sea-change in the mid-60s, when all racist Democrats became racist Republicans and all Republicans became tolerent, diverse, loving Democrats. To hear Democrats talk today, it was Republicans who favored slavery, segregation, Jim Crow laws, repression of women and black codes.

Did you forget to include the date, Lone? Or HOW it was passed? This amendment was never legally ratified, and therefore in our opinion has no effect in the law, nor dosubsequent Court decisions based on it..
