BEIJING, May 20, 2006 (AFP) - China hails the Three Gorges dam, which it completed Saturday, as the solution to a series of national problems, but critics say the price is too high.
Where proponents of the world's largest hydropower project see increased electricity generation and improved flood control, opponents see damage to the environment, ruin to China's heritage and misery to local residents.
I predict the Three Gorges Dam will go down in history as mankind's worst engineering disaster.
It has displaced more than a million people, who were relocated to land that wasn't nearly as good as the property they were forced to leave. The government also did not adequately compensate those people. It's how the Chinese do things.
The dam will submerge two cities, 11 counties, 116 towns and countless historical sites.
The reservoir is in danger of being filled with garbage and pollution from abandoned factories, hospitals and cities on the Yangtze River. It will also block silt, which is essential to slowing soil erosion downstream.
But that's not the worst of it. In the 10 or so years that I've been covering this story, I've heard consistent rumors that something is not right with the dam. Well, I know what's not right. It was built in Communist China by Communist Chinese. If there's one sure thing about China, it is that the godless communist country is riddled with corruption. I'm willing to bet that contractors and government officials at every level have gotten very rich cutting corners on this project. From flawed designs to substandard building materials, I think this gigantic dam will come tumbling down someday, killing millions.

I cannot believe what you titled this post...I have to admit I didn't notice it on the first read through...but I am smiling now.
Heh. Some people would consider that racist, but I don't. Americans have a long tradition of showering contempt on our enemies. Nobody considered it racist when we called Nazis "krauts." ChiComs are at least as evil.
From the Boxer Rebellion, to Korea, to Vietnam, the Chinese have never been shy about killing Americans or providing support to those who do. If they could press a big, red EASY button and wipe us from the face of the earth, they would not hesitate to do so. I cringe every time I hear an American politician call China our "friend."
