This Day in Republican History 3/12/06

March 12, 1956 Ninety-seven Democrats in Congress condemn Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Board of Education, and pledge to continue segregation To hear the Democrats tell the story today, they championed the cause of school desegregation. They lie. In the early 1950's, racial segregation in public schools was the norm across America. As it had been since the civil war, civil rights advances were on hold as long as a Democratic president occupied the White House. Although all the schools in a given district were supposed to be equal, most black schools were far inferior to their white counterparts. In Topeka, Kansas, a black third-grader named Linda Brown had to walk one mile through a railroad switchyard to get to her black elementary school, even though a white elementary school was only seven blocks away. Linda's father, Oliver Brown, tried to enroll her in the white elementary school, but the principal of the school refused. Brown went to McKinley Burnett, the head of Topeka's branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (which, at that time, was predominantly Republican) and asked for help. The NAACP was eager to assist the Browns, as it had long wanted to challenge segregation in public schools. With Brown's complaint, it had "the right plaintiff at the right time." Other black parents joined Brown, and, in 1951, the NAACP requested an injunction that would forbid the segregation of Topeka's public schools. The U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas heard Brown's case from June 25-26, 1951. At the trial, the NAACP argued that segregated schools sent the message to black children that they were inferior to whites; therefore, the schools were inherently unequal. One of the expert witnesses, Dr. Hugh W. Speer, testified that: "...if the colored children are denied the experience in school of associating with white children, who represent 90 percent of our national society in which these colored children must live, then the colored child's curriculum is being greatly curtailed. The Topeka curriculum or any school curriculum cannot be equal under segregation." On May 17, 1954, the Supreme Court unanimously declared that separate educational facilities are inherently unequal" and, as such, violate the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which guarantees all citizens "equal protection of the laws." So, the Republicans won another battle against Democratic racism -- another of many to come. But it was a victory that had to be backed up with force. In September 1957, as a result of that ruling, nine African-American students enrolled at Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. The ensuing struggle between segregationists and integrationists, the State of Arkansas and the federal government, President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus has become known in modern American history as the "Little Rock Crisis." The crisis gained attention world-wide. When Governor Faubus ordered the Arkansas National Guard to surround Central High School to keep the nine students from entering the school, President Eisenhower ordered the 101st Airborne Division into Little Rock to insure the safety of the "Little Rock Nine" and that the rulings of the Supreme Court were upheld. Republicans need to start kicking Democratic butts again. Democrats don't want bipartisan cooperation. They simply have to be shoved aside in order to do what is right. That's how it has always been, that's how it always will be.

Ranger, don't get me wrong, I think today's demoRATS are loathsome swine. But in the 50's both parties had their conservative and liberal wings, and there was not a clear consensus in either party regarding ideology.

It was the SOUTHERN Democrats that opposed integration.

Today's Blacks believe that their best interests lie with the democrats. If this was not true, then 95% of them would not be alligned with them. I know you've explained that the dems have brainwashed blacks with propaganda, and this may explain 50, 60 70 % , but NINEY FIVE?

Are blacks so naive or ignorant of politics that they vote against their best interests to the tune of 95%? No. There must be something else.

Tell us the REAL reason in your opinion that Blacks are so married to the dems...

Respectfully, Trader Rick

First of all, I don't blame the Democratic party's racism solely on southerners. That's just more of their propaganda. John Kennedy voted against the 1957 civil rights act. Although he promised blacks progress in civil rights, he didn't introduce a single piece of civil rights legislation during his presidency. FDR was elected FOUR times and didn't lift a finger in the name of racial equality. He was brought up among the New England elite and belonged to restricted country clubs, where blacks were waiters and Jews were not allowed at all. It was left up to Truman to desegregate the military and that was because the bravery and skill of black soldiers could no longer be denied. If northern Democrats were any different than southern Democrats, they should have done something about it. Where are the fiery speeches condemning southern Democrats for their racism? Why didn't they eject those rednecks from their party, or start anew? Why did FDR nominate an unqualified former Klansman to the Supreme Court? It was Hugo Black who started the present day separation of church and state scam. To this very day, why does a former Ku Klux Klansman serve as a senior Democrat in the Senate? Is it only southerners who carry around bags of Oreos to throw at black Republicans? Is it southern cartoonists who depict Condi Rice as a house slave? It just doesn't wash. As for how blacks can be brainwashed, do whites have white leaders? If George Bush or even John Kerry declared himself a white leader, would he be met with anything but derision? Just the very fact that blacks not only accept, but enrich racial hustlers like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson leads me to believe that they are more prone to the lies told by the Democratic party. Perhaps it's something in the black psyche brought on by centuries of slavery and repression. I'm not qualified to comment on that authoritively. How does voting for a Democrat mean blacks are voting in their best interest? All you have to do is list the problems in the black community that Democrats have solved. Is there even one?? Whatever happened to midnight basketball? Nope, I'm convinced that racism is at the very foundation of the Democratic party. And you know what happens when you knock out a foundation.
