Standing Out Like a Healthy Thumb
It's Oscar night and every TV in the newsroom (we have one on every desk) is tuned to ABC -- except mine. I'm watching War Stories with Oliver North on Fox. It's about the WWII film industry. Ollie just said that Hollywood was afraid if they didn't make patriotic films, FDR would nationalize the film industry. Can you imagine the primal screams from the left if President Bush threatened to do that? Few people remember that FDR ran this country -- especially the media -- with an iron fist.
What the....?
Some guys from our Tibetan service just walked through giving a tour, with an honest-to-goodness Tibetan monk in tow -- complete with shaved head and saffron robes. He looked just like the Dalai Lama -- except I know the Dalai Lama is currently in India. The monk just stopped at my desk and said, "You have a very kind face," and then walked away.
I don't see him talking to anyone else in the room. Oops, now they're gone. That was weird. I guess he was a Republican.
The rest of the guys in the newsroom (no women in tonight) are chattering like a bunch of schoolgirls over the Oscar show. I can't concentrate. Good thing it's a slow news night. I'm glad I'm working the Africa and East Asia desks tonight. I see nothing but Clooney, Clooney, Clooney, Clooney on the national news wires.
