This Day in Republican History 09/13/05

September 13, 1988 President Ronald Reagan proclaims first National Hispanic Heritage Week Another first for the Republicans. Where were the Democrats? September 13, 2004 President George W. Bush allows federal assault weapons ban to expire, returning Second Amendment rights to Americans. Crime drops. According to FBI figures, since the expiration of the assault weapons ban, the number of murders nationwide fell by 3.6 percent -- the first drop since 1999. In states that have their own assault weapons bans, there was a smaller drop in murders than in the 43 states without such laws. States with bans averaged a 2.4 percent decline in murders; in three states with bans, the number of murders rose. And overall violent crime also declined since the expiration of the federal ban. Gun controllers' fears that the end of the assault weapons ban would mean that streets would run red with blood were simply untrue. Although 560 news stories ran in the first two weeks after the expiration expressing fears about ending the ban, not a single story has run in any news publication reporting the drop in crime.
