Mary Jo, We Hardly Knew Ye
I work across the street from the National Mall. There is always something going on there. The National Indian Museum opened last year right across from our building and there's some other construction going on between that and the Arboretum. One thing they should erect on the mall is a statue of Mary Jo Kopechne, because she is the single person most responsible for keeping Ted Kennedy out of the White House. She sacrificed her life for her country.
I was just weeding out some of my books, trying to reduce four book cases to three to make space for a fireplace and came across Senatorial Privilege: The Chappaquiddick Coverup by Leo Damore.
A lot of people think Mary Jo drowned on that night of July 18, 1969. I'd forgotten that she didn't. Kennedy swam ashore but didn't report the accident until the next morning, later claiming he had been dazed by the crash. When the car was recovered, Mary Jo was found kneeling on the back seat with her hands on the front seat and her nose sticking into an air pocket at the top of the vehicle. She didn't drown, she suffocated. Police said she could have survived that way for at least an hour, maybe more. I can't even imagine her terror-filled last minutes at the bottom of that cold, black pond. Had Ted Kennedy tried to rescue her or had he even gone for help immediately, she could have been saved and his presidential hopes would have been cast in bronze. But the coward ran and the coward covered up and the coward let a lovely young woman die. His punishment? He pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and had his driver's license suspended for a year. Although it was proven Mary Jo survived the crash, the judge (the best Kennedy money could buy) would not allow ANY testimony stating that fact. And now the coward sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, passing judgment on the character and morals of people whose boots he isn't fit to lick. The man must have no soul. How else can it be explained that he didn't blow his brains out decades ago? Not only does he apparently feel no guilt, not only does he refuse to tell the truth of what happened that night, he refuses to even admit that he did something criminal. If he does confess his sins, there's probably a priest out there somewhere who wakes up screaming in the middle of the night.
And why does Kennedy keep winning elections? Because his liberal constituants keep reelecting him. Because leftists the world over have the same mind-set. They develop these weird cults of personality and worship, rather than admire, their leaders. The Kims in North Korea, Mao, Stalin, Ho Chi Minh, and here in America, the Kennedy family and the Clintons. I don't believe there is some sort of vast left-wing conspiracy. I believe liberals' brains are all wired alike. It's as though they were all non-thinking drones hooked into a central computer. They speak only to other liberals, they read only liberal publications and visit liberal Websites. Their minds are totally closed to any ideas other than their own. If you have the stomach for it, visit a few liberal blogs. They all look alike. They don't present facts and discuss them, they shout slogans and parrot talking points and express hatred, hatred, hatred for anyone who doesn't believe what they believe. Besides being depressingly hateful, they are mind-numbingly boring. Changing the mind of a liberal is like converting a Muslim to Christianity. It can be done in rare cases, but then that person will be reviled by his former cohorts.
I think I'll read this book again before I toss it.
