UPDATE: Seems the federal government is listening. (They always do when they get caught.) They are offering schools the choice of whether they want pink slime in their hamburger. Also, McDonalds says it will no longer use it. If hamburger is labeled "USDA organic" it does not have this stuff in it.
Mmm, mmm, mmm. No, this is not the skinned carcass of a Burmese python. This is part of Michelle Obama's pledge to provide healthier choices in school cafeterias and military mess halls..
This product is fondly referred to as "pink slime." It consists of a mixture of leftover trimmings, sinew, and other beef parts culled from
a cow, once the expensive and more recognizable cuts of meat have been
harvested and sent to a butcher. The collection of leftovers is spun in a
centrifuge to remove excess fat, washed in a disinfecting solution and
then minced for use in various applications, including hamburger - 15 percent of hamburger, under USDA regulations. This is what is listed as "beef products" on pet food cans. Mmm, mmm, mmm, How is this healthy? Well, because it is treated with ammonia, to kill E. coli and salmonella. The USDA just bought seven million pounds of it. The federal school lunch program used an estimated 5.5 million pounds of the processed beef product last year alone.
People often characterize Michelle as having a "Let them eat cake" attitude. I wish.

That is beyond disgusting. Maybe I should just go vegan and be done with it.
Yech! My poor boys are eating that rubbish?
We are eating it too. It's estimated that about 70% of all the hamburger in the country has this stuff in it. I recommend grinding your own. It would taste better anyway.
The reason burgers in the 50s were legendary is that they included every cut of beef. It consisted of prime rib, sirloin, ribeye, everything.
LR, that's not a bad idea. But where on earth would we even find meat that hasn't been tainted but that crap?!
I don't eat a lot of hamburger meat, but my eldest son and husband do.
I and my youngest son are the chicken breast eaters.
Here's a good link. http://culinaryarts.about.com/od/beefporkothermeats/ss/grindburg.htm
