Specter has always been a turncoat. At least now that he's not wearing his sheep's clothing, it will be easier to spot him. He is a liberal, and you know what I always say about expecting things from liberals.
I wish we had a rule that they couldn't change except during re-election. It's patently unfair to those who voted for someone to have them switch in midstream. Of course, a rule wouldn't stop them from voting on things they way they would were they members of the opposition, but still....
I don't think we can say the Republicans are cleaning house because of this announcement.
Spectors decision was his own. He knew he would lose the primary and figured the only way for him to stay a Senator would be to run as a Democrat. It might backfire on him. Even though Democrat voters know he's been a Liberal, they might not trust him to be truly Democrat on issues, and he might not get elected to his next term. We'll have to wait and see.
The Republicans will have to clean house if they expect to gain any seats in the next congress. Obama has until the next election to totally screw up this country (more than he already has), so by that time, there may be enough Demiocrats that are sick of his brand of "change", that they might switch parties. We could be witnessing a major shift in the majority party.
"I am not prepared to have my 29-year record in the United States Senate decided by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate -- not prepared to have that record decided by that jury, the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate." - Arlen Spector
Yeah, why should the voters or his constituents have any say in whether or not he stays in the Senate...
Good riddance, and don't let the doorknob hit ya, Senator Spector.
And take the rest of the Gang of Seven Traitors with you.
Whether or not the Republican Party survives the series of screwups and betrayals that have put them in the minority, Conservatism is getting stronger every day.

Eh, good riddance to him.

This defection brings us uncomfortably close to a Beijing-style rubber stamp Congress. With our current president, that would be disaster.

I couldn't be happier about this.
