"Lutto"...Italian for "Mourning"

My neonatologist in Rome, who cared for my preemie son when he was born there, sent me an update on Facebook about the Earthquake in Italy. Just note that English is not his first language.

Dear georgina....

i was on call in the NICU . Ancona is far 150 km from Aquila and Roma is about 200 km.

We heard the heartquake and I woke up....

It was the worst i can remember...(obviously we do not have so much experience in heartquake, like u!).

The situation is TERRIBLe...more than 200 deaths... Aquila was big city, capital of the state "Marche", more than 500,000 inhabitants. The "downtown of the city is pretty much...simply...DESTROYED! Fancy that...the Governor's Palace (in which the emergency services should have come from)..is destroyed itself! (I saw a pix in which only the main door is saved!).

The problem is that the city was very old and precious, and obviously not built using modern technique (it was built in 1600-1800!)....there are hundreds thousands people without any home....Even my parents in Rome went to the street for the fear (even thought the buildings there are much more modern and safe...)It's a big tragedy... thats what I can say..we are all safe...but it's a big tragedy...Hope to hear you soon!

I think heartquake is a very appropriate word.

I know. When an earthquake happened here in SoCal about 6 months ago he emailed me about it and spelled it the same way then too.

So I think it is on purpose.

The recent earthquake was not in Le Marche, but Abruzzo, which is an adjacent state.

No doubt the Facebook author is fatigued and traumatized making such a slip all too easy.

We certainly sympathize with what the good people of Italy must now confront.
