The Unluckiest Man in the World

Tsutomu Yamaguchi has to be the unluckiest man in the world. It seems he received burns to half his body when Hiroshima was nuked on August 6th, 1945, while he was on a business trip to the city. So, he immediately went home.......to Nagasaki.....and three days later.....
Kyodo: 93-Year-Old Man Recognized as 'Double Hibakusha' Nagasaki, March 24 Kyodo -- The Nagasaki municipal government has officially recognized a 93-year-old man as a double sufferer of radiation from the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, city officials said Tuesday. Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a resident of Nagasaki, was earlier recognized to have suffered from the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945. Three days earlier, he was exposed to radiation in the first atomic bomb blast in Hiroshima. The fresh recognition was inserted into the official certificate for an atomic bomb sufferer, or hibakusha, provided to Yamaguchi, the officials said. Yamaguchi is probably the first double hibakusha whose certificate carries official recognition of his exposure to radiation both in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, they said. The municipal government has found that Yamaguchi sustained serious burns to the upper half of his body in Hiroshima when he was exposed to radiation on Aug. 6, 1945 at a point some 3 kilometers from ground zero while he was staying in the western Japanese city on a business trip from Nagasaki. Yamaguchi was again exposed to radiation the following day when he entered a point about 2 km from ground zero in Hiroshima to take a train back to Nagasaki, the findings showed. After returning to Nagasaki, Yamaguchi was exposed to radiation in the atomic blast on Aug. 9 and also entered an area near ground zero in the southwestern city on Aug. 13. In January this year, Yamaguchi asked the Nagasaki city government to add his exposure in Hiroshima to his hibakusha certificate. Acting upon the request, the municipal government added the fresh description to his certificate on Monday, the officials said. Those carrying a hibakusha certificate are eligible to receive various allowances and medical treatment free of charge at designated hospitals.

And I thought I was the unluckiest man in the world. Just goes to show, there's always someone worse off than yourself.

That's why I always remind myself of an old saying, "I cried because I had no shoes, until I met a man who had no feet."

I'm wondering how long ago he got his original certificate, and why so long for him to be recognized as a double? I guess you can't really give him double benefits, hmm?
