Sam Update

If progress can be measured in inches, Sam is making progress. Now, instead of being hissed at when he walks within three feet of Ginger, he can get within about six inches. He meows in his sleep. He wants to sleep near someone, so I usually find him reaching out of his bed to touch my hand. Or, he sleeps near Ginger's bed. His problem is he keeps provoking them. Last Saturday, I turned around and he was flying through the air with his right leg extended, claws fully spread, to deliver a little ninja death blow. I plucked him out of the air before he could land on Ginger. I taught him how to play FETCH! Or he taught me. I'm not quite sure. His favorite toy is a plush goldfish with a feather tail. He scratched me once while playing with it and I tossed it across the room. He chased after it, brought it back and dropped it at my feet. So, I tossed it again and he repeated his performance. It has become his favorite game. He looks so cute when he's trotting toward me with a mouthful of feathers. Meanwhile, I might be out for the rest of the season, because my pitching arm is going bad. Sometimes, I toss it among a pile of boxes or other stuff and he won't stop searching until he finds it. He reminds me of Chito.

My all-time favorite cat, Charcoal, fetched, too. In a houseful of four females, we had a supply of foam hair curlers--he loved those! He always had to have one that was his to play with, and he'd bring it back to you if you threw it for him. My little sister and I used to sit on opposite ends of the living room with Charcoal between us and toss a curler back and forth. He'd do the best jumps and flips trying to grab it in mid-air.

:::sniff:::: I miss him. :(

It's good for a man to have a pet.

My Dad taught a cat to roll over, stand up on her back feet when he snapped his fingers, fetch a toy, and come when he called her by name, but he literally worked with her for years to do it.

I've heard that the reason cats don't recognize their name is that they don't hear it enough.
