The polling numbers on a Hillary-Rudy showdown point to a profound shake up. The latest Pew Research Center survey shows that Hillary would defeat Rudy easily. The reasons they cite, however, are shocking, and constitute a total reversal from recent presidential races.

LR, I could have told you that exactly 9 months ago, as I told Gus Van Horn:
"Gus, as you may recall, I am an independent voter. Rudy cannot carry the South. Ergo, he absolutely cannot win yet.
Personally, I admire Gingrich who has yet to announce and many suggest probably cannot win at this juncture."

And 2 years earlier:
"Queen Machiavelli would trounce McCain on native intelligence alone. ...Either way, Lindsey Graham might have a shot at a Supreme Court nomination.
Unless a sparkling, Republican dark horse emerges (there is time), it comes down to Rudy vs Queen Machiavelli."

NOW: Is Romney going to be that sparkling, Republican dark horse?
That quote is dead on...and obvious to anyone in both those categories.
I think Pat Robertson made his call too early anyway.
Does anyone think Rudy is really going to make it that far?
BTW - what happened to Fred Thompson?
Fred Thompson, who entered the contest late, has major dollars to raise. For health and age reasons Thompson will hardly have another good shot at President.
Is he really in the running (some campaign stops, but not too many) to help someone else's ticket as a popular VP choice?
What strong 'R' candidate needs and wants to balance his ticket with a popular, anti-abortion Southerner? Giuliani comes to mind first, Tonto.
Back in April of this year, U.S. News &World Report mentioned that ticket as Washington "Talk of the Town".
