Is It Over?

Can I come out of hiding now? Was this the last tribute to Diana? Is the mourning period finally over? The big one-zero usually means a transition to normalcy, but I'm not sure a decade is enough for some people. We can only hope. I was waiting at a train station near Tokyo one night for my ex to come home from her part-time job teaching English. The door of my car opened and a British woman who was nearly the spitting image of Di popped in. She looked at me and said, "You're not Charles." I said, "And you're not Di, but you're pretty close." Just two ships passing in the night. I've been busy the past few days with my car. I took it in for an emissions test ($28!!) and it failed. I took it across the street to a Chevy dealer and they said I need a new catalytic converter. They would be happy to do the job for $900. OR I could find a Pontiac dealer and it would be free, because they are warrantied until 66,000 miles and I don't yet have 47,000 miles on the car. Got an appointment next Wednesday. I'm getting a lot of e-mails about preparations for the death of Castro. Seems he might already be dead. If JFK hadn't choked, he would have been killed or overthrown in 1961 in the Bay of Pigs invasion. And 36 years of incalculable suffering would have been avoided. You'd think liberals would have learned from that and from Vietnam and from Somalia what happens when the good guys turn tail and run. But nope, they're pushing for yet another defeat, which will result in decades more human suffering -- including in our own country. Just got a bulletin that South Korea paid the Taleban 20 million dollars to release 19 missionaries. The Taleban says they will use the money to buy weapons, reestablish their communication systems and fund more suicide bombings. Lovely. This is what happens when you cave to terrorists. Nothing good ever comes of it. Of course, they could be lying. Terrorists aren't exactly pillars of the community. That DREADFUL show Red Eye just began on Fox News, so it's time to hit the mute button and listen to yesterday's episode of Laura Ingraham.

My car needs a motor. I got lucky and found a guy who will fix it for "only" $2200.00. He will use a used engine with 47,000 miles on it, which by itself, is only $950.00. The rest is labor and fluids and seals and misc items. I had it towed for $50.00 to him on Wed, and was going to pay him $1450.00 down and the rest on completion in a couple of days, but had an emergency and had to ask him to hold off until Tuesday. He told me the law won't allow him to keep my car at his property for more than a couple of days (Which is probably not true) so I had to pay another $50.00 to have the car towed back home, only to have to pay another $50.00 to tow it back to him on Tuesday.

(sigh) When it rains, it pours.

Okay, I admit it, I stayed up all night, back in 1981, to watch Charles and Diana's wedding. So shoot me. ;)

My emissions test was $60. I'd offer to trade, but at least my 10-year-old van passed. :)

That is so disturbing about South Korea. I can't imagine what they were thinking!

Although I'd been driving farm machinery since I was about 10, my first car was a 1957 Datsun Bluebird that I bought in Okinawa in 1969 for $95. Gas then was 32 cents a gallon. This car packed a thundering 34 horsepower. It was green with big, gray patches of Bondo. I called it Puff the Tragic Wagon.

Things have changed.
