Considering that rabbits reproduce like.....well, rabbits, what was the point of this?
BEIJING, July 24 (Reuters) - China has produced the world's first cloned rabbit using a biological process that takes cells from a fetus, state media said on Tuesday.
The female rabbit, which weighed 60 grams at birth in February, was now growing normally at an animal centre in Shanghai, the China Daily said

Because they wanted to prove they could clone, too. But, the Chinese don't have the patience to wait the five months for a sheep's gestation, so the rabbit's one-month gestation is almost instant gratification. My guess is they'll never try cloning an elephant. :)
I must disagree about the Chinese lack of patience. Hundred-year-old eggs?
