A Horror Story Hidden from National Attention
On Saturday January 6, 2007 Hugh Christopher Newsom, age 23 and Channon Gail Christian, age 21, both students at the University of Tennessee went out on a date. They were driving in Channon’s Toyota 4-Runner when they were carjacked at gunpoint. Suddenly the crime turned far more savage than an armed car theft. Chris and Channon were kidnapped and driven to 2316 Chipman Street where they were forced into the home at gunpoint. While Channon was forced to watch, her boyfriend was raped prison style and then his penis was cut off. He was later driven to nearby railroad tracks where he was shot and set afire. But Channon’s hell was just beginning. She was beaten; gang raped repeatedly in many ways, had one of her breasts cut off and bleach poured down her throat to destroy DNA evidence—all while she was still alive. To add to Channon’s degradation the suspects took turns urinating on her. They too set her body afire, apparently inside the residence, but for some reason left her body there—in five separate trash bags.
Here are the suspects...

This story is beyond my comprehension. How horrible- how sickening- how awful. The parents, family and friends of these two young people-- how can you begin to console them? How do they make sense of this? How do they move past the imagery of this unthinkable crime-- the torture these two endured??? Oh my God... the imagery of the brutality... There is no punishment suitable for these criminals... the word criminal or rapist is too good for them. Death by lethal injection... too good for them... I can't help but think... eye for an eye...
Try and tell me that there is no such thing as evil on this planet...
Ninety percent of the power of the press is in what they DON'T cover. They tend to downplay black on white and homosexual crimes so as not to contribute to "stereotypes." I could tell you about dozens of stories that never made it into the national press. But I won't, because they're just too sickening.
This type of "hate" crime doesn't fit the MSM mold, so they ignore it.
I beg you to withhold pre-judging.
We do not yet know for certain that the suspects' attorneys (trial lawyers all) played any role in the reticence of the "free" press.
Who would like to bet that local news outlets had been threatened with serious litigation if they published the full story? When lawyers use extortion (threat of lawsuits its perfectly legal). Extortion of businesses by anyone else in is apt to bring criminal charges.
I think I read on other blogs that it was reported locally. My relatives in Murfreesboro, not far from Knoxville, had heard the story on their local news.
I think it is just not being seen nationally.
It appears to be playing out as a local story like an alligator in a swimming pool type of thing.
But Who knows?
The evil in this world seems to increase daily. How totally sickening and horrifying. Lethal injection is too kind. I'm thinking more in line with the horrific execution scene in "The Green Mile".
Ok LR - ...I am starting to wonder what's worse a journalist or a lawyer...the two of us are excepted of course...better yet don't answer this.
Let's put it this way. No journalist has ever forced me to pay more than $50,000 and half my retirement pay to a woman who cheated on me.
I learned today that Fox News covered this story. This weekend, Geraldo also reported on the lack of media coverage. Charley Daniels, who lives about 150 miles from the crime, also commented on the lack of coverage, not only national, but local.
LR, I consider you my trustworthy, journalism "subject matter expert". In reading my local Sunday paper (NYT owned) I encountered an article buried on page A17 by Duncan Mansfield (AP)
entitled: "Critics: News media ignoring slaying of Tennessee couple.
Mansfield quotes "... claims made over the Internet that the couple were sexually mutilated are absolutely not true', John Gill, special assistant to District Attorney randy Nichols, said Friday."
I and your readers trust your integrity and journalistic access/prowess. Please, please follow this up for us.
Should Gill be correct, it only demonstrates the potential for damage when the press DOES NOT REPORT the news in timely (homicudes occurred in January) fashion!!! Excuse my anger: Damn their arrogance!
Best regards, Vigilis.
Here is the 46-count grand jury indictment. I don't see mutilation specifically mentioned, but "bodily injury" appears a lot. My attorney sidekick could possibly comment further.
I looked at several newspaper and TV news sites and saw no mention of mutilation.
