On the Road
I'm using the house computer at the MicroTel in Springfield Il. For some reason, my laptop wireless card isn't working. I'll deal with that today.
I stopped at a Cracker Barrel in eastern Ohio Sunday and saw the most astonishing thing. There was a guy there in his 40s busing tables. As soon as he got to a table, it was as if he went into turbo-power. It LITERALLY looked like someone had pushed the fast forward button on a VCR. I timed him and he could clear a table in 5-10 seconds. It took about 50-60 seconds for the other busboy to do it. And he didn't just throw stuff into a a pan, he sorted everything into its place. He told a woman at another table that he'd been a busboy for 16 years. He said 14 years ago, he was on television as the country's fastest busboy. Yet, here he was at a Cracker Barrel in Ohio. I finished my meal and before I was halfway up, he was at my table. He just appeared out of nowhere. My table was clean before I could leave the dining room.
I've seen a lot of remarkable things in my world travels, but I'll have to file this one away as one of the most impressive.
My right rear tire went low yesterday. That's a new tire, maybe a month old. So, I stopped to put some air in it. I stopped at six gas stations and none of them had air. I finally had to go to a truck stop and they had air only on the trucker side. Has someone invented flat-proof tires that I haven't heard about? Everywhere I stopped, people would remark on my car. "Nice ride," from some hippy-type at a gas pump, "pretty car," from some lady in a parking lot, "impressive," from some kid working at a convenience store. It felt good, but how do you respond to stuff like that. "Thanks, I made it myself." "Thanks, I picked it out all by myself." I usually just say, "Yes, I was lucky to find it." That seems to do it.
I'll be visiting friends all day and then I hit the road again tomorrow. I'm going to try to make it in one haul so I get home in time to pick up my cats before checkout time. That's no place to pay an extra day.

Sheesh. Maybe you should wear a "caution" sign with all the things going out of order around you. You don't want to be responsible for someone's pacemaker quitting. ;)
Just say "thanks" delivered with a nice warm smile when someone compliments your car. I like the part about "I was lucky to find it." No more than that needed. :)
Hey Kimosabe... people out here in the midwest are just friendly. Frenziedfeline is absolutely correct... a thanks and a smile.
Most Shell stations in the area have free air.
Now... if you are coming back the same way... The hubby and I would love to take you out to lunch... breakfast... dinner...(let me know if you are interested and I'll see what I can do about asking off work). We are just south of Cincinnati...Michael actually works in Cincy.
If you prefer to keep your anonymity... I completely understand and respect that... Just know the invitation is there.
Ohio's kinda goofy, eh?
Thanks, cathy, but I'll be passing way north of you. I've got to make it home tonight so I can check my cats out of their hotel before noon tomorrow. If I leave no later than 9 am central time, I'll hopefully get home at 2 am eastern time. My problem is I never build any wiggle room into my itinerary. No sights for me, just hard driving.
