Great Democrats in History -- Mary Surratt
Mary Surratt was the wife of known Confederate sympathizer and owner of the Surratt tavern which was an official Confederate station on one of the secret lines of communication between Richmond and Washington D.C. After her husband died in 1862, Mary Surratt continued to run the tavern as a safe haven for Rebel spies, agents, scouts and blockade runners. Her son, John Harrison Surratt, became associated with Booth after they moved to a boarding house that she owned in Washington D.C. She was arrested on April 17, 1865 and charged with conspiracy along with the others on May 10, 1865, found guilty and hanged on July 7 -- the first woman to be hanged by the U.S. Government. Her part in the assassination conspiracy and her death sentence were greatly debated in the years following her death.
