It started here with "hate crimes." Liberals weren't satisfied with punishing people who committed crimes, they wanted to know what the criminal was thinking when he did it. So, now our once-free society is watched over by thought police, who punish people not only for doing bad things, but for thinking bad things. China has the same system. Dissidents who are lucky enough to be released from prison still have to report to police at regular intervals to report their thoughts. Europe is also sliding down that slippery slope. Sheep who call themselves Europeans can be prosecuted for having the wrong attitudes and expressing those attitudes through speech or writings. That is the eventual outcome everywhere that leftists have the upper hand. It's a liberal mindset, whether it be in communist China or in the story below:
A Finnish court on Tuesday said it had found a newspaper editor guilty of inciting racial hatred after he published a reader's letter which approved of the Holocaust. Antti Toiviainen, editor-in-chief of Finnish regional daily Uusimaa, was fined 1,050 euros (1,370 dollars) by Porvoo district court in southern Finland. The letter writer, whose identity was not disclosed, was also found guilty of inciting racial hatred and was fined 570 euros. The letter was also published in the Kansan Uutiset paper. The editor-in-chief Janne Maekinen had refused to run the letter but it was later published due to a technical fault or human error. He was ordered to pay a 400-euro fine for professional misconduct. The letter in question discussed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and described the killing of six million Jews by the Nazis in World War II as acceptable and desirable.

Hey LR, talk about the pot calling the kettle black! Don’t forget what the Conservatives are bringing to the party, with phone records monitored, email intercepted, bank transactions captured and even my frequent flier miles of interest to the Republican US Government, all without need for ‘demonstrable cause’ or a warrant. Between the Liberal Thought Police and the Conservative Secret Police monitoring everything we do, say or think I reckon you can kiss your Freedom Of [Anything] goodbye and just resign yourself to being a good little prole, never having to think for yourself again!
I chalk up your concerns to liberal paranoia. When liberals stop telling me that our own government blew up the world trade center, that there is a vast right wing conspiracy and that the Republican party is the party of racism, that's when I'll take them seriously.
I can't think of a single freedom I had 10 years ago that I don't have today.
If our freedoms are being eroded, it's being done by the left, with their repressive campus speech codes, unfair hate crime legislation, gun control and onerous taxes.
Liam, don't you live in London, England?
I can assure you that the Government is not monitoring my phone calls, my E-Mails, bank transactions, or frequent-flyer miles.
That's because I am not calling Terrorists, Not E-mailing Terrorists, I don't transfer money to Terrorists, and I don't fly to meet with Terrorists.
I don't buy into the Liberal Paranoia precisely because I think for myself.
America is at War.
I am interested in America winning the War.
And I have absolutely nothing to hide.
But if I did, or if I were worried about my Freedoms being infringed upon, I still have the freedom to go out and buy myself a gun with which to defend myself, and protect those Freedoms. (A freedom that I understand citizens of London no longer enjoy.)
So, which are you? Pot, or Kettle?
When James Byrd was dragged to death, they passed hate crime legislation.
When Matthew Shepard was beaten and left for dead, they passed hate crime legislation.
When the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City was bombed they passed an anti-terrorism bill.
Wasn't murder already illegal?
What has hate crime and anti-tewrrorism bills accomplished that simply enforcing the law against murder can't do?
They make laws that are already in the criminal code to appease screaming leftists.
I call this Government overkill.
You know Mark you are exactly right and it always puzzles me with my liberal friends who want their FREEDOMS unfettered so badly but they will sign them away in a flash for laws like this that do more to harm my freedoms than anything. As if there is no danger or slippery slope in limiting what you can "hate." I just don't get them.
Isn't there an american author right now who just published a book advocating for the outlaw of religion and religious thought as hate speech and should be prosecuted because of all the harm it has done.
I can't think of his name but he was given a not so good review in the New York Times surprisingly.
