They say you learn something every day, but I have scaled that back to once a week -- not because I know everything, but because I'm just not that curious. I met my quota for this week when I stumbled across this article tonight.
Thousands of marauding racoons, descendents of animals released by Hermann Goering, have overrun vineyards in central Germany.
When was Hermann Goering in North America?

Let me know when you find out when he was over here....
How's the packing coming along? Kitties are probably getting a little anxious, yes?
Goering never visited the US.
Raccoons had been introduced into Germany in the late 19th century, and were bred under strict control; their pelts were highly prized by hunters, much like mink and ermine.
Goering was the local cabinet minister when approached by a breeder, who suggested it would "enrich the local fauna" if raccoons were released into the wild. I tend to think the breeder pandered to Goering's obscene tastes, and took advantage of his morphine addiction.
Either way, it was a mistake, and the raccoon has become a pest, much like the cane toad here in Australia.
Ummm....packing? Well, I have done a few things. I called the Salvation Army. They'll be here on the 24th to pick up some big stuff that I'd rather not move, like my sleeper sofa, entertainment center, fish tank, etc.
I bought a small, desktop aquarium to keep my fish in until my beautiful new black and chrome, bowfront aquarium is delivered to my new apartment. Since I'm going to set up this new place as a classy bachelor pad rather than a depressed, divorced-guy pad, the singing trout over the tank will have to go. Anyone want it?
Monday, I will call Comcast and the phone company to switch my service.
But as far as packing, well, I've been collecting boxes at work.
I get the keys on a Thursday, but the manager doesn't allow moving until the weekend, so I'll spend that day just moving the stuff I can carry. That leaves me three days to move the rest of my big stuff. I'll have to order a new couch long enough for me to stretch out on. No sleeper bed this time, because nobody spends the night here.
Gotta find a place to rent a dolly. A new one costs about $180, although that's cheaper than hiring Three Thieves and a Truck.
Oops, kitchen timer. My steak is ready to come out of the oven.
I don't see in the article where it implies Goering visited North America.
By the way, the coons I shoot around here, by the looks of their teeth, are not "rodents" as the article states.
