Dividing will conquer

Is there a reason the plan in Iraq has not always been to divide the country up? It never existed that way on its own to begin with. That's why Sadaam had to kill and torture anyone not a Sunni to keep the country in line. If we don't help them do this, they are going to do it themselves just like Yugoslavia. Aren't we better for helping them split up?? Now that would be reshaping the Middle East I think in the best way, rather than watch them slaughter themselves and rape women for years like in former Yugoslavia. What benefits are there to keeping it together? I ask because I do not know. Iran will finish its IRAN/IRAQ war from the 80s as soon as we are gone. That loss was an embarrassing blow to them. Iran has every intention of taking back at least parts of Baghdad that they believe belong to Iran. Iran will come out of this stronger no matter what, but the four groups in Iraq have a better chance if we help them split up the land. It worked in Yugoslavia.

Another reason would be that if the Kurds got their own country, the Turks would immediately invade and try once again to wipe them out. Without all of Iraq behind them, they wouldn't stand a chance.

The problem is Turkey is a NATO ally. And we have no treaties with the Kurds to protect them.

If the Iraqi government was set up as a confederation, instead of a federation it possibly would be a good idea because the country would be together just for defense from Iran, Syria, and Turkey. BUT the main problem would still remain that Iran is fomenting most of the problems in Iraq (Well that Al-Sadir guy isn't helping either).
