African-American civil rights leaders Martin Luther King and Ralph Abernathy vote for Republican Dwight Eisenhower for President It has been lost in history that most of the civil rights leaders before the 1960's were allied with the Republican Party. Why? Because the Democrats opposed ALL attempts at leveling the playing field for blacks and women. They were opposed to black equality and to women's suffrage. Of course, Democrats now credit themselves with being the party of civil rights and progress. In actuality, I don't know of a single thing the Democratic party has done to advance civil rights in this country. As Joseph Goebbels said, “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it."
