Why do liberals DESPISE big government...think of it as a "police state"...YET...all the ideas they promote require big government to be involved and/or pay for it...isn't that an oxymoron? I need to figure this out...one day when my kid asks me "what a liberal is?"...I would like to be able to understand what they are by then so my answer will make sense?

"Honey, a liberal is someone who not only wants to force their beliefs on you, they want to force you to like their beliefs. And they believe everyone should be forced to be tolerant of all ideology and behavior - except them, of course.

Allow me to save you the time. Liberals do not make sense. It's futile.
There are very few true liberals around anymore. Just as Islam has supposedly been hijacked by radical terrorists, liberalism has been hijacked by radical leftists. The last true liberal in the White House was JFK. Don't try to figure out what liberals stand for, because they don't stand for any one goal. They are a jumble of socialists, anarchists, communists and just plain power-hungry dummies. The entire movement is irrational and illogical.
It's hard to believe these pot-smoking, spoiled brats grew up to be such stiff-necked absolutists, but they did. They are no longer anti-authoritarian, they are anti-conservative.
Liberal used to mean liberty. Liberals were opposed to authoritarianism. That's why it is no surprise that FDR waged war against the socialist Nazies, the fascist Italians and the imperialist Japanese. But with the hippy generation in the 60s, liberalism changed to mean opposition to authority.
These spoiled brats are willing to use any means necessary -- including the police -- to tear down the fabric of society, so they won't be subject to society's rules of moral conduct. And in so doing, they have become what they claim to despise.
No need to explain liberalism to Nic, just tell him not to play with the bad kids.
The idea that liberals hate big government may actually go back to marx's original thought that government will just fade away when everyone is equal.
Logic and liberal are both mutually exclusive.
Liberals used to be naive pseudo-intellectuals with no common sense of reality. Nowadays they are just morons or traitors.
