Is it just me or did most people not even know what a Muslim was 6 years ago?? It wasn't even in the top 3 before. Whoever talked about Islam??? I was a Theology major in college and went to seminary afterwards and studied other relegions. .
The only ones offered...Protestantism, Catholicism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, and Ancient religions like Zoroastrianism, etc., but no class on ISLAM!! I happened by chance to seek it out on my own for other reasons at the time but otherwise wouldv'e never known about it. I saw a recent college class list from my old college and now...the Theology department has a minor offered in Islam!!! and this was a Catholic university!! Isn't it wierd a religion no one noticed blows up NY, and now dominates our news, and how we think about other cultures?? How did this happen?

Americans -- especially liberal Americans -- have tunnel vision. If it doesn't impact their life, they pretty much ignore it.
I first became acquainted with Islam when I was stationed in Turkey. It was like living on another planet. Even atheists don't realize how much the Judeo-Christian culture has affected their behavior. It's very disorienting to be suddenly immersed in a culture that has totally different rules.
Yeah, I barely remember the Iranian Hostage Crisis. And then the attacks in the eighties, and the first attack on the trade center.
Nine years ago I snuck into a world religion class with an ex-girlfriend that had a muslim woman speaking, because I didn't know alot about islam. (or so I thought)
The only reason I might have followed this is because my dad was a newsjunkie, when I was growing up. (This was before CNN)
