Now that Castro may be pushing up communist daisies...is it really such a bad idea that we do to Cuba what we are allowing ourselves to do with China who is our communist enemy in the right hand and our economic/cheap labor market brethren in the left? Why wouldn't it work now that he may likely be gone? Read here. Someone else was reading my mind. I am willing to be wrong about Cuba but isn's it hyprocritical what we do with China what we are still unwilling to do with Cuba and why? We should hate China more for the mess they have created in North Korea and Taiwan and instead allow Arnold to smoke his illegal Cohebas under full protection of the law. Just a thought.

Yes, what we are doing in China is hypocritical. We should be treating China and Vietnam and Laos and every other communist nation like we treat Cuba. I guess if you want to justify it, Cuba is the only communist regime in our hemisphere, and that has always been intolerable (keep an eye on Venezuela).
So far, Cuba has more of evil than of good. I think we should continue to do what is right in at least one of these thug nations. Well, two -- there's Burma.
Seems to me that American foreign policy is only driven by American corporate interests. (Iraq's oil, for example.) As you point out the hypocracy of China vs. Cuba. China is in many many ways far worse than Cuba. It's leaders allow their people to be exploited in American sweat shops. Meanwhile, didn't the whole embargo against Cuba start when Castro kicked out the foreign corporations? That was his biggest crime.
As for the comment about Cuba being more evil than good. I don't remember Cuba ever carpet bombing innocent citizens inplaces like Iraq and Vietnam.
And what kind of a lifestyle would you be leading if it weren't for American corporate interests? I can assure you, you wouldn't be sitting in front of your own computer, complaining about it.
And if it makes you feel any better, we used to fight wars with cannon and muskets, or even further back, clubs and rocks. We use the technology we have. Although it would be much easier and result in much less loss of life to our OWN troops, carpet bombing is out.
If you want to worry about innocent people, turn your eyes to California. More Americans are murdered there every year than in the first three years of the war in Iraq.
Without American corporate interests I'd probably be sitting on a rock somewhere complaining about something else (my wife would agree with you on that).
I watched a very interesting show on CBC last Sunday on life in Cuba since the Soviet Oil ran out. Castro has managed to have Cuba produce (barely) enough food by converting the Sugar plantations into real farms. They are now practicing sustainable agriculture because they were forced to. I couldn't help but think this will be all of North America's fate once the Oil drys up. Interesting stuff. The Harpers magazine web site has an article on the same topic.
If I lived in Cuba I would probably complain about Castro and have my butt put in jail. Oh well. Cheers....
Pol Pot did the same thing - although to extremes.
I doubt whether the oil will dry up so long as Democrats prevent us from drilling for it.
And IF the oil ever does dry up, we'll come up with something else. Contrary to what some people would have you believe, research being done on every type of alternative energy. Unfortunately, we can't invent starships just because we want to. Technology, like evolution, takes time.
