I Left My Brain in San Francisco

I'm going to turn in early tonight. I'll deal with the following when I wake up. Feel free to comment before I put my two cents in.

Legendary singer TONY BENNETT has slammed his home country of America for not contributing anything other than jazz music to world art and culture. The IF I RULED THE WORLD crooner feels that Europe and Asia offer far more culturally than America does. Bennett says, "I have traveled around the world to Asia and Europe. They show you what they have contributed to the world. The British show you theatre, the Italians show you music and art, the French show you cooking and painting, and the Germans show you science. "The only thing that the United States, which is still a young country, has contributed culturally to the world is jazz - elongated improvisation. It's tragic." And Bennett feels that Americans don't even appreciate the impact of jazz in popular culture. He says, "Fifty years from now people will be bowing to DIZZY GILLESPIE and CHARLIE PARKER, just like impressionist painters like MONET, who were starving in their day. The Americans don't even know what they have come up with."

I'm up. What's going on with these people who earn unbelievable fame and fortune in this nation and then turn around and trash the country that gave them everything they have? Tony Bennet made his fame and fortune in recordings, radio, television and movies. Where were recordings, radio, television, movies -- and the worldwide industries that followed -- invented? Right here. I've traveled around the world to Asia and Europe myself and can tell you that I always breath a deep sigh of relief whenever I return to my homeland. The conveniences we take for granted here are unknown in much of the world. Mr. Bennet is very selective with his examples. Germany gave us science? What world-changing inventions or discoveries have come out of Germany since the turn of the 20th century? There's the first pregnancy test. But the Germans also brought us two world wars, the Nazis and the Holocaust. The French show you cooking and painting. What, nobody else cooks and paints? I have some black-eyed peas and hamhocks bubbling in my crockpot right now that I'll put up against any French cuisine. The French also gave us the Reign of Terror, colonialism that is still causing disruption all over the world -- and a knife in the back every chance they get. This is all senile nonsense. Tony Bennet denies that America has contributed ANYTHING to culture other than Jazz? Well, let's see. In the field of literature, there were such American authors as: And those are just some of the ones who are dead. How about American composers? Well, I was going to post a list of names like George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Scott Joplin, etc. But the list I found was a thousand names long and didn't even include Dolly Parton (snooty music critics). It has become more than clear now that the way to spot a fanatic, a liar, a moron, or just someone who's going senile, is whether they make anti-American comments. If they do, they're wrong, wrong, wrong every time. This is the greatest country in human history and anyone who says it's not is nuts.
