Three-term Sen. Joe Lieberman fell to anti-war challenger Ned Lamont in Connecticut's Democratic primary Tuesday, a race seen as a harbinger of sentiment over the conflict that has claimed the lives of more than 2,500 U.S. troops in Iraq.
Unbowed, Lieberman immediately announced he would enter the fall campaign as an independent. Only six years ago, Lieberman was the Democrats' choice for vice president.
With Lieberman's loss, the Democratic Party has finally accomplished its goal of transforming itself into the party of total losers. Aging hippies, cowards, socialists, anti-Semites, drunks, potheads, communists, anti-Americans, all may now feel free to flock to the Democrats' big circus tent and set up their own little sideshow.
After the retirement of Zell Miller, Joe Lieberman was the only honest statesman the Democrats had. He was the only anchor to their leftist radicalism. It remains to be seen whether a Republican can be elected in a blue state like Connecticut, even if the Democrats are split down the middle. But this is going to be an interesting fight that will extend into the 2008 elections.
