This Day in Republican History 7/27/06

July 27, 1960 Republican National Convention, Vice President and eventual presidential nominee Richard Nixon insists on strong civil rights plank in platform Nixon got his civil rights plank. It reads in part:

This nation was created to give expression, validity and purpose to our spiritual heritage—the supreme worth of the individual. In such a nation—a nation dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal—racial discrimination has no place. It can hardly be reconciled with a Constitution that guarantees equal protection under law to all persons. In a deeper sense, too, it is immoral and unjust. As to those matters within reach of political action and leadership, we pledge ourselves unreservedly to its eradication.
To read the entire Republican platform, go here. The Democrats weakly responded by pledging for the first time to obey civil rights legislation. Of course, they went on to fight against the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Had it not been for Republicans, that landmark legislation would never have passed. And who's taking credit today for civil rights advances??? Kennedy went on to win (steal) the election and, despite his promises, not a single piece of civil rights legislation passed during his administration.

I read your history of the Republican Party over at your other blog. I found it interesting that you could only cite 3-4 items each decade for the last four decades where Republicans have worked for the Good. Could there have been a change in the Republican Party since the 1960s?

Maybe Nixon's downfall and the Reagan Revolution that ousted the more reasonable folk from the Republican Party?

So, how's this: I'll give the Republicans credit for what they did Pre-70s - because they were often on the right side of truth, justice and the American way then - if you'll recognize how the party has fallen from grace since then?

Ah, the old, "what have you done for me lately" dodge. Well, golly, after ending slavery, segregation, black codes, lynching, Jim Crow, etc., maybe there just isn't that much injustice around anymore. The President is Republican. The House is Republican. The Senate is Republican. How is that a fall from grace? The only thing you can prove is that Democrats are better liars than Republicans. They got you to fall for their propaganda.

I would suggest you read the second entry on that blog, "The Racist History of the Democratic Party.

If you're going to debate me, be sure you're well armed.
