What's in a Name?
If you were Jewish, would you join the Nazi party? Surely you don't hold that whole "holocaust" thing against the Nazis. It wasn't the Nazi party that burned Jews, it was Germany. It wasn't Nazis who hated Jews and thought them to be subhuman, it was all Germans. I mean, that was generations ago, and it isn't like Nazis are burning Jews now. Sure, no Nazi leader has ever come out to apologize for the party's part in the holocaust, but can't we let bygones be bygones? Can't we all just get along?
Let's play a little word substitution game.
If you were African-American, would you join the Democratic party? Surely you don't hold that whole "slavery" thing against the Democrats. It wasn't the Democratic party that enslaved blacks, it was America. It wasn't Democrats who hated blacks and thought them to be subhuman, it was all Americans. I mean, that was generations ago, and it isn't like Democrats are enslaving blacks now. Sure, no Democratic leader has ever come out to apologize for the party's part in slavery, but can't we let bygones be bygones? Can't we all just get along?
Isn't it interesting how a little word substitution game can bring on such intriguing insights?
Now, let's try this game again.
If you were African-American, would you join the Republican party? Surely you don't hold that whole "slavery" thing against the Republicans. (I don't see how you could, since it was Republicans who ended slavery). It wasn't the Republican party that enslaved blacks (that is correct), it was America (No, America was divided along party lines on slavery). It wasn't Republicans who hated blacks and thought them to be subhuman (that's true), it was all white Americans (no it wasn't. It was whites who established the Underground Railroad. It was whites who preached continually against slavery. It was a white woman(Harriet Beecher Stowe) who wrote "Uncle Tom's Cabin"). I mean, that was generations ago, and it isn't like Republicans are enslaving blacks now. Sure, no Republican leader has ever come out to apologize for the party's part in slavery (Well that would be silly, but I can't think of any Republican leader who has come out to take credit for freeing the slaves either), but can't we let bygones be bygones? Can't we all just get along?
"I hate Republicans and everything they stand for." -- Howard Dean
I guess we can't all just get along.
Try this game some time. It's a useful tool in getting to the truth.
