This Day in Republican History 6/15/06

June 15, 1864 Republican Congress votes equal pay for African-American troops serving in U.S. Army during Civil War I believe they should have been paid more than their white counterparts, because the Confederate army had a policy of executing any black soldier wearing a Union uniform. Talk about combat pay! They also had to cope with racial prejudice among the Union ranks.

They were treated like dirt, and fought just as hard as any white soldier. It's indeed a shameful part of our history.
