A Year Ago Today 5/05/05
Last year at this time, I made a brief observation about Cinco de Mayo. Apparently, it isn't as big a deal in Mexico as it is in this country. According to the History Channel, it is celebrated only in the town of Puebla, where the battle took place. But, in a country like ours, where even the holy day of Christmas is just another excuse to throw parties and get drunk, that's not surprising.
The illegal immigrant debate was not nearly as big last year as it is today. It's remarkable how quickly a controversy can snowball into a major issue.
One thing liberals can't wrap their small minds around is that the human race once went through a period of worldwide colonialism. Rich and powerful nations colonized poor and weak nations. It happened. Get over it! Democrats have apparently gotten over being the party of slavery, since to hear them talk, they had nothing to do with it. And they still have no problem with illegal immigrants working for slave wages.
One wacky element of the illegal immigration movement is the Reconquistadors. They want the U.S. to return California, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas to Mexico, saying we "stole" it from them. Maybe we did, but so what? Didn't the Spanish steal all of Latin America from the Indians? I guess that doesn't count, since Indians have always ranked lower in the pecking order than Hispanics. They still do today.
Suppose we did give those states back to Mexico. In a decade, they would be as corrupt and poverty-stricken as the rest of their country. And then, the Mexicans would be flocking out of that former U.S. property into the U.S. proper, again seeking a better life. A better plan would be to annex the rest of Mexico to the United States. Under which situation do you think the life of Mexicans would improve?
I guess the only way to shut those pinheads up would be for the entire population of the world to migrate to Africa, where the human species supposedly originated. We could put the entire population of the world in a city the size of southern Africa, with a population density about the same as New York City. Can you imagine what a great Chinatown that city would have? All the rest of the world would be empty and nobody would be colonizing anyone.
