This Day in Republican History 4/20/06
April 20, 1871
Republican Congress enacts the Ku Klux Klan Act, outlawing Democratic Party-affiliated terrorist groups that oppressed African-Americans
President Ulysses S. Grant's vigorous action under the Civil Rights Act of 1871 (also known as the Ku Klux Klan Act) did much to destroy the terrorist wing of the Democratic party, but it has reared its ugly head in several incarnations since then. Democratic Senator Robert Byrd is the only former member of the Klan still serving in Congress. Hopefully, he will be the last.
