This Day in Republican History 2/21/06

February 21, 1863 Republican Governor John Andrew establishes the 54th Massachusetts, the famous regiment of African-American U.S. troops in which two of Frederick Douglass’ sons served Blacks who wore the the Union uniform were in particular danger during the Civil War because Confederate soldiers would execute them and their white officers rather than take them prisoner.
