January 2, 1895 Republicans Clara Cressingham, Carrie C. Holly, and Frances S. Klock of Colorado are sworn in as first women to serve in a state legislature in U.S. history Another first for Republicans. Where were the Democrats? Actually, Democrats -- those champions of equal rights -- were opposed to women voting or getting into politics. The Democratic Party was the primary stumbling block to women's suffrage.
