Silent Night, Holy Fight

Cold in the night, no one in sight
Winter winds, whirl and bite
How I wish I were happy and warm
Safe with my family out of the storm

Yeah, those are the "new" lyrics to Silent Night, being fed to innocent elementary school students in the Ridgeway, Wisconsin school system. I don't even know what they mean. Is this about some homeless kid? Is this supposed to make children feel bad and overprivileged on Christmas? Somebody in Ridgeway is about to get his chestnuts roasted on an open fire. The conservative legal group Liberty Counsel says the school has also decorated its classrooms with Santa Clauses, Kwanza-themed items, Menorahs and a "Labafana" -- which Liberty Counsel says is a Christmas witch -- but has no Christmas decorations. Liberty Counsel says it will file a lawsuit if the situation is not addressed. The group sent a letter to school administrators. "When a school changes 'Silent Night' to 'Cold in the Night' and secularizes the lyrics, it is hostile to Christianity, and its actions violate the First Amendment," Meanwhile, a Madison, Wisconsin school stopped their students from ringing bells with the Salvation Army, because one parent was offended that the school was working with a faith based charity. I guess that person doesn't care if some kids are "cold in the night." Oh, and in Plano, Texas there is a school that has forbidden the wearing of red and green during the Christmas season. Sounds like a hate crime to me. Yet, ask the liberal TV talking heads, and they'll swear up and down that there is no war against Christmas. Or, if you can find secularists who agree that there is hostility toward the holiday, they'll say they aren't a part of it. They just love to celebrate Christmas, even though they aren't particularly religious. They just don't get it. Every time a person celebrates Christmas without the slightest thought for the birth of Christ, they are diminishing one of the most important events on the Christian calendar. Every time a person decorates their yard with Santa Claus, reindeer, candy canes, and no manger scene, they are trivializing the true meaning of Christmas.

Christmas IS under assault, both by jerks and bigots who hate Christians and by those who just want to feel good without taking on any of the responsibilities of Christianity. We'll talk again when Peter Cottontail comes hop hop hopping down the bunny trail -- the second most important date on the Christian calendar.
