SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- South Korea's top official on the North said Monday that it's too early to explore alternatives to diplomacy to solve an international nuclear standoff with Pyongyang. "I think we are at a point where we should still be working harder for a diplomatic solution," Unification Minister Chung Dong-young told journalists, according to his ministry. When, in the entire history of mankind, has a brutal dictator ever been sweet-talked through diplomacy into changing his ways? The only way to end a repressive regime is by overthrowing it internally, as has happened when riots unseated Suharto in Indonesia or when the People Power movements in the Philippines got rid of Marcos and Estrada. The second way is through external intervention, such as we did in Nazi Germany, Afghanistan and Iraq, to mention a few instances. When the good guys win, freedom prevails. When the bad guys win, let the bloodbath begin. And when the diplomats are allowed to have their way, nothing happens. Nothing changes. Kim Jong Mentally-Il is not a direct threat. As paranoid as he is, he knows if he does anything to irk us, he'll quickly be dumped onto the ash heap of history. His only ambition is to live out his life in the lap of luxury, being worshiped by his starving populace. It's certain there will be no internal uprising, since North Korea implemented its version of the Brady Bill decades ago. So, that leaves it up to us. What do we do? If left up to Democrats, the status quo will continue. They're good at turning a blind eye to crimes against humanity so long as it's a communist who's committing those crimes. But Republicans have a problem ignoring human suffering. They poked their nose in when they ended slavery in this country, and now they seem compelled to poke their nose in to end 20th century dictatorships. Will they never learn?
