This Day in Republican History 04/02/05

April 2, 1855 Republican John Langston becomes nation’s FIRST African-American elected official, in Brownhelm, OH; later served as U.S. Rep. (R-VA) and as diplomat in Republican administrations. Another first for Republicans. Where were the Democrats? Ah yes, were it up to the Democrats in 1855, John Langston would have been a slave.
