March 12, 1956 Ninety-seven Democrats in Congress condemn Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Board of Education, and pledge to continue segregation. Although the unanimous ruling declared that segregation in education was inherently unequal, many Southern Democrats regarded the decision as a "clear abuse of judicial power" and ten years after the case, only one percent of black students in the South attended desegregated schools.
