This Day in Republican History 03/01/05

March 1, 1875 Civil Rights Act of 1875, guaranteeing access to public accommodations without regard to race, signed by Republican President U.S. Grant; passed with 92% Republican support over 100% Democrat opposition. The act guaranteed that everyone, regardless of race, color, or previous condition of servitude, was entitled to the same treatment in, "inns, public conveyances on land or water, theaters, and other places of public amusement." The Democrats got their revenge eight years later in 1883, when the Supreme Court deemed the act unconstitutional on the basis that Congress had no power to regulate the conduct of individuals -- a bogus ruling, since EVERYTHING Congress does regulates the conduct of individuals. Since the Dredd Scott decision of 1857, the courts have been the Democrat Party's most effective tool for thwarting the will of the people. (In the Dredd Scott decision, the Supreme Court, comprised of seven Democrats, ruled that slaves were property, and as such, had no rights).
